Telugu Desam Party decided to contest in Port Blair municipal elections which are scheduled to be held on September 19. Port Blair municipal council has 18 wards but TDP is contesting in 10 wards only where Telugu people are significant in numbers. August 30 is the last date for withdrawal of candidates. Telugu Desam leadership seems to be trying for national party status (if Telangana and Andhra states separate).
Counting of votes will be held on September 21. BJP candidate defeated Congress party candidate in 2009 Parliament polls in Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
There are 1 Zilla Parishad, 1 Municipal council, 9 Panchayat Samitis and 67 Gram Panchayats in Andaman Nicobar Islands.
